Voltage Stability Improvement of Grid-Tied Photovoltaic System in Aljouf Region Using Dynamic Reactive Power Control

Presented by: Dr. Abdelaziz Salah Saidi

Date: 19/10/2022 - 9:30 AM

Abstract — The analysis of voltage stability of transmission networks with a grid-connected enormous photovoltaic (PV) plant is a challenging issue due to the unpredictable generation of a solar system. When evaluating loading capability, the stabilization of PV output power is a key factor in determining the degree of penetration of PV in active transmission networks. This paper has contributed to clarify the potential function of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) integrated into the power system network. STATCOMs are commonly employed to improve static voltage stability, transient stability, maintain transmission limits, and dampen low-frequency oscillations. A comprehensive investigation and analysis of dynamic voltage stability in the transmission system utilizing the STATCOM module are presented. The validity of the study is assessed under the Saudi grid code (SGC). The system under test consists of a 300MW PV plant at Sakaka, Saudi Arabia, connected to a 16-bus transmission power network and the STATCOM, which is already deployed in one of the buses. The PV plant is monitored under a variety of meteorological conditions, including irradiance, temperature, and relative humidity. The parameters of optimal PV power output, which were found from January 2020 to December 2020 on a real time basis, are then used in the static and dynamic stability analysis. Using PSAT software, several case studies are evaluated with and without the PV plant and with and without the STATCOM to observe the transient voltage stability. The simulation results illustrate STATCOM's effectiveness in improving power system quality based on the SGC. The analysis of voltage stability reveals that the dynamic behavior of the voltage is heavily dependent on the power network's short circuit capability at the grid-connecting point of PV.
