Dr. Mohammed Zubair’s current research towards detecting oral tongue lesions to detect signs of oral cavity cancer was mentioned in the reputed EETimes (USA) online magazine. He is accustomed to operating at the intersection of medical care and computer science and is on a quest to solve one of the most critical problems in one particularly painful form of cancer affecting the oral cavity. His experience is a bright spot in a new, blazing trail of experiments that are changing the way we look at medical care and cancer detection.  He has developed a novel AI based hardware solution for detecting pre-cancerous lesions on the tongue for early diagnosis of oral cavity cancer. The system showed both benign and precancerous conditions, alongside traditional diagnostics methods. What he discovered was nothing short of astonishing. His detection accuracy (percentage of correct prediction) was close to 90%, with detection inference time at around seven milliseconds. Dr. Mohammed Zubair is validating with his research what many in his field are also saying: AI can greatly improve the accuracy of cancer detection in images, and open up new ways of developing and deploying cancer screening with a new set of bionic eyes that can see and detect what a human can’t.

The College of Engineering and the Education for Employment Community (EFE) are looking for a way to collaborate for the training and development for the students. The Faculty of Engineering represented by the Dean of Engineering, the faculty Vice-Dean and the head of the Specific Initiatives and Quality programs initiated a meeting with The Education for Employment Community (EFE) represented by its director Abdullah Al-Ghamdi to boost the training and development program for the college of engineering students to provide them with an opportunity of direct employment. The dean of the College of Engineering explained that this initiative will nurture the skills of the students of the Faculty of Engineering and fit them towards the goals of the Kingdom's 2030 vision, especially from the labor market perspective.
In cooperation with Shell, the College of Engineering provided a training course for college students titled: The international Program Nxplorer Under the auspices of His Excellency the Dean of the College of Engineering Dr.  Mohammed Khaloofah Al Mesfer, the Training Unit of the College of Engineering, in cooperation with Shell, presented the international program Nxplorer to 57 students, from all departments, for three days 16-18/6/1441.  The aim of the training program is to provide the trainees with the ability to use creative thinking mechanisms in creating effective solutions that can be applied to local problems related to the environment, food or energy. The program focuses on defining the link between food, water and energy, and building awareness, developing knowledge, and providing tools for thinking and complex problem-solving skills for future leaders.  The NXPLORERS program relies on the use of a unique blend of three approaches: Systematic thinking: It is a framework for seeing the larger picture rather than seeing isolated parts. Scenario planning: ask 'what-if' questions to explore alternative perspectives on the future and find reasonable stories about it. Change theory: a methodology of thinking imagining how and why a particular change is expected.  Merging these methods into one program creates a new way to look at the complexities and challenges that exist in society, and it shows young people how to deal with the complex challenges facing society, now and in the future.
The seminar will be presented by Faculty members: Industrial Engineering Department Dear All, As per the part of the initiative in the faculty members Teaching-Learning Process, the Industrial Engineering Department is pleased to invite all the Faculty of Engineering to attend the Seminar on Tuesday 18/02/2020.   Mechanical Engineering Department Scientific Seminar Title: Biodiesel From Direct Transesterification It is a well-known fact that energy consumption is rapidly increasing due to population growth, the higher standard of living and increased production. A significant amount of energy resources are being consumed by the transportation sector leading to the fast depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution. Biodiesel is one of the technically and economically feasible options to tackle the aforesaid problems. Biodiesel may be produced by various methods however; biodiesel prepared from Direct Transesterification has reduced reaction timing and acidic value for biodiesel produced besides improved yield.
Seventh Scientific Seminar for Engineering College organized by the Electrical Engineering Department, 1441 H A Seminar was hosted by the Electrical Engineering Department titled “Speech as a Biomedical signal using Artificial Intelligence” was Presented by Dr. Mohammed Usman Farooq for the Faculty of Engineering on Wednesday 20/11/2019. The seminar was attended by all Chairman’s, faculty members and students from the college of engineering. The presentation focused on the diagnosis of speech for both resting state and post-physical activity state to serve as a signal in detecting heart-rate. The detection and classification were accomplished using the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) which were used to train and test with various algorithms using machine learning (ML) to achieve promising results. At the end of the presentation during the Q&A session most of the faculty members placed queries which added to the main goal of the seminar i.e., the Teaching-Learning Process. Finally, all the chairman’s and faculty members praised Dr. Usman for his contribution and efforts in making the seminar fruitful.

Scientific Visit for Mechanical Engineering Department’s Students to the Shoqaik Steam Power Generation Plant In the practical application framework of the theoretical study, the students of Mechanical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, King Khalid University attended a scientific visit to the Shoqaik Steam Power Generation Plant under the supervision of Dr./ Baiumy El-Assal and Eng./ Waleed Saeed. The visit was very useful for the students, where they had seen most of the parts that they learned in the Power Plants course. In the start of the visit Eng./ Ahmed Al Qarawi (Manager of Technical Support) held a meeting with the students, explained some important information about the plant and gave them some advice about how to take the advantage of their time before and after graduation. Also, he explained the model of the whole plant in detail. Then, Students were accompanied by engineer/ Abdelaziz Aal Saleh (Chairman of Planning and Materials Department) on a tour in the station. He introduced a detailed explanation of all the station components from the beginning of the water intake from the sea and the various stages of water purification processes. A Brief Explanation for the water pumps and their types and the RO desalination units, that has had an effective impact on the gained information for students. Students also watched all the Power Plant components of boilers, fuel systems, burners, and turbines. At the end of the visit Eng. Khalid Bani Sarh (Manager of the Plant) held a meeting with the students where he welcomed them, thanked them for the visit and talked about the importance of linking education to industry and then presented them with souvenirs from the station.
Scientific Visit to Wastewater Purification and Treatment Station   A group of students from the Department of Chemical Engineering visited the Abha wastewater purification and treatment station on Tuesday, 05/11/2019. Within the framework of the program, field visits are conducted for each semester under the supervision of Dr. Arshad khan. The purpose of this visit is to identify the existing sewage systems as well as the stages of wastewater treatment and the components of the treatment station. The wastewater treatment and purification station in Abha, the central station, has been operating for more than 30 years, in accordance with the 40000 m3 wastewater treatment system. This station operates a tertiary treatment system that allows safe irrigation for palm trees. These waters are analyzed on a daily basis. The results of these analyses show the safety of the treated wastewater that flows to Wadi Bisha. The basic operations of the wastewater are explained until they are processed, first by using a special panel composing the station components with engineering drawings. After, we visit the site and monitors all the stages of the treatment, and these by explaining the physical therapy to biological treatment and to pumping treated water into drainage channels outside the station. Then, Engineer Abdel Mohsen Sayed present new created environmental laboratory and the water analysis can be realized. At the end of the visit, and by the accompanying doctor, Chemical Engineering Department expressed their thanks and gratitude to the engineers who are supervising the station for useful and valuable information that promotes the scientific method and the integration of the educational process.
